Making delicious dishes from destructive fishes!
The Lionfish invasion began in south Florida during the 1980’s and has become the fastest growing marine invasion in history. Originating from the Indo-Pacific, lionfish have no predators in Florida and Caribbean waters. They are found in almost all marine habitats and are known to feed on anything they can swallow, including commercially important fish. FWC has been encouraging mitigation efforts through conducting fishing tournaments for years, but a new mitigation technique is being encouraged which is for you to “Be the Predator.â€
The Sebastian Lionfish Fest is this years’ event to attend! After the fishing tournament, the cook-off competition will commence. Based on community education, guests will learn about the lionfish invasion, how to prepare these fish safely, and different ways to help protect our coastal ecosystems from their harmful biological impacts. All attendees will be able to try multiple lionfish dishes prepared by competing local restaurants and vote* for their favorite.
