Timeless Elegance: Robert Farber's Gia on the Lifeguard Stand

In the world of fashion photography, few images capture both compositional mastery and cultural significance as vividly as Robert Farber's 1979 photograph, Gia on the Lifeguard Stand. Originally created for a Bloomingdale's editorial advertisement early in Farber's career, the image features the legendary Gia Carangi, often hailed as the first supermodel, seated gracefully atop a lifeguard stand. Standing below her are sisters and fellow models Janice (left) and Debbie Dickinson (right), completing a tableau that is as harmonious as it is iconic.

Farber's composition guides the viewer's gaze in a continuous loop. Gia's elegantly extended legs draw attention to Debbie, whose angled stance naturally leads the eye toward Janice. Janice's poised figure, balanced on tiptoe with her arm lifted skyward, returns the gaze back to Gia, creating an unbroken visual rhythm. The reflection of the Dickinson sisters in the pool beneath them reinforces this cyclical flow, offering a mirrored echo of the scene above.

Adding to the visual cohesion, all three women wear striped swimsuits, each with a distinct cut, that tie them together stylistically. The trio's arrangement also calls to mind the classical image of the Three Graces from Greek mythology, long celebrated in art as symbols of beauty, grace, and charm. Farber's modern interpretation bridges the worlds of timeless myth and contemporary fashion, making the photograph both culturally resonant and aesthetically enduring.

This striking work is part of the Timeless: Robert Farber's Fashion Photography exhibition, on view through August 31, 2025 at the Vero Beach Museum of Arts. Visitors are invited to join Robert Farber himself for a guided tour on August 29, 2025, from 3 to 4 p.m., for an intimate exploration of the artistry behind his most celebrated images.
