There is nothing quite like a Vero Beach pineapple picked at the peak of ripeness, and this weekend you can get your hands on a whole truckload of them.

Nature Farms, our hometown growers of naturally grown pineapple, just harvested a big crop and delivered it straight to AKOHO for a Pineapple Palooza weekend. If you know, you know. This fruit is sweet, it is local, and it goes fast.

A season that almost did not happen

This one was hard earned. The February freeze cut the crop back, and the family farmstand is staying closed for the year. But the plants that made it through came back with flavor, and the harvest that just came in is worth celebrating. Rather than open the stand, Nature Farms brought the whole haul to AKOHO so you can still get that fresh, local pineapple you look forward to all year.

What: Pineapple Palooza Weekend at AKOHO

When: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this weekend

Hours: Friday 10 to 4, Saturday 10 to 3, Sunday 10 to 2

Where: AKOHO (A Kitchen of Her Own), 9090 US-1, Sebastian, on the east side of US 1 next to Paul's Guns

Bring: Exact change, please. A cooler is a smart idea too.

Look for the sign only Vero could love

AKOHO shares a roadside sign with Paul's Guns right on US 1, with a friendly little pineapple mascot waving you in. AKOHO stands for A Kitchen of Her Own, a local quicheria known for soups, pastries, strudel, coffee, quiche, tarts, and dessert bowls. So grab a treat while you load up on pineapple, and make a morning of it.
