If you drive Oslo Road in southern Indian River County, something looks very different now. A full I-95 interchange opened there on October 5, more than a year ahead of its original spring 2027 completion target. It is the first new interstate interchange in Indian River County in over 50 years, and the $95.78 million project brought more than just a new ramp.
What does this mean for your commute?
Oslo Road was widened from two lanes to four as part of the same project. State transportation officials say that combination will cut travel time by up to 50 percent for some commuters and reduce congestion pressure on the existing I-95 connections at Indrio Road and State Road 60 by about 20 percent. Construction began in August 2023.
Why does the emergency access piece matter so much?
Before this interchange existed, rescue crews responding to a crash on this stretch of I-95 had to travel from the Indrio Road interchange, 10 miles south, or the State Road 60 junction miles north. State officials project response times dropping from 19.5 minutes down to 8.5 minutes, a reduction of up to 56 percent. Indian River County Emergency Services Director and Fire Chief David Johnson noted the corridor sees many accidents, and said the new connection gives crews a much faster way in. Indian River County Fire Rescue plans to build a new station about a mile away at 82nd Avenue and Oslo Road. The interchange also adds an extra evacuation route for the area.
What else is new along the corridor?
The interchange includes sidewalks, bicycle lanes, intersection lighting, and Wrong Way Vehicle Detection technology on the ramps. Because Oslo Road is a designated truck route serving southern Indian River County, state officials expect the project to strengthen freight movement and supply chain efficiency across the region.
And there is a wildlife side to the story
During right-of-way acquisition in the southwest quadrant of the interchange, land was set aside to create a gopher tortoise habitat. It will serve as the only relocation site of its kind in southeast Florida.
