Indian River State College recently celebrated its 100,000th credential conferred since its founding. It's a impressive institutional milestone, but the more compelling story belongs to the graduates themselves, including one who returned this year to address the newest class.
Taylor Gerring graduated from IRSC in 2003 with an associate's degree in business. Ten years later, he was sitting at a table in Switzerland with seven other people. Together, they co-founded Ethereum.
If you've heard of Bitcoin, you have a rough idea of the space, but Ethereum operates differently. Where Bitcoin functions primarily as a digital store of value, Ethereum is closer to infrastructure. It's the backbone of web3, a decentralized layer of the internet where people can transact, build applications, and enter into agreements without routing everything through a bank, a platform, or a major tech company collecting a fee along the way. The ecosystem built on top of Ethereum is now valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars and is moving steadily into the mainstream.
Gerring spoke to roughly 1,500 graduates at this year's commencement. His advice was direct: "Jump in with both feet and celebrate the wins." Coming from someone who started with a two-year degree from a community college on the Treasure Coast and ended up reshaping global finance and technology, that's not a platitude, it's a data point.
Indian River State College has long been a quiet engine of this region's workforce and economy. Stories like Gerring's are a reminder that what happens inside those classrooms can ripple far beyond the county line.
