Every Sunday in Stuart: A Waterfront Market Worth the Drive

If a Sunday morning road trip sounds good to you, the Treasure Coast has a farmers market worth knowing about. Market on Main sets up every week in historic downtown Stuart, rain or shine, on the riverfront at Flagler Park. It is a straight run down US 1 from Vero Beach, and you can make a whole morning of it.

Market on Main runs year-round at 221 SW Flagler Ave, Stuart, FL, tucked under the Roosevelt Bridge between Hudson's on the River and Flagler Center. Hours change with the season. From October through March, which means right now, it runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. From April through September it wraps up at 1 p.m.

What can you find there?

The market has 70 open-air vendor spaces set in a circle, and the rule that shapes it is simple: it is a "producer only" market. Vendors make, grow or create what they sell. Resellers and multi-level marketing operations are not accepted, so the person behind the table is usually the person who made the goods.

Stuart Main Street describes the market as being predominately a weekly food market and business incubator. Produce, meat and seafood sit at the top of its vendor wish list, followed by loose leaf tea, pottery, fresh or cold pressed juices, pasta, handmade or upcycled clothing, and wood and leather work. Honey, jams and jellies, dairy, macrame, coffee and specialty drinks are on the list too.

Live music plays for the full market hours, and a mobile craft bar from Libations Mobile Catering gives adults a reason to linger. Some Sundays bring health, wellness and art activities or special events. The market also gives space to local nonprofits each week so they can share their causes, and it produces a podcast telling vendors' stories.

Bring the kids on the third Sunday

One of the more charming features is the Kids Market, held on the third Sunday of each month. That makes the next two November 15 and December 20. Young entrepreneurs under 16 run their own booths and sell original, handmade goods and art. No resale items are allowed, and a parent or guardian stays with each young vendor the whole time.

There is a small $5 fee per market date, which the organizers say gives kids a realistic taste of business. They also bring their own tent, table and chairs. It is a genuine small-business incubator in miniature, and young vendors can be nominated for Martin County's Youth Entrepreneur of the Year. Got a crafty kid? The Kids Market application is online.

What makes the setting so good?

Flagler Park sits on the St. Lucie River alongside downtown's riverwalk, with tall palms and easy access to and from US 1. It has public restrooms, a playground, lots of shade, and several covered pavilions and gazebos, so families have room to spread out after they shop. The market does close on major holidays, as decided by market management, so check before you drive down on a holiday weekend.

Who puts it together?

The market is run by Stuart Main Street, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has been working since 1987 to keep downtown Stuart active and historically grounded. It is a nationally accredited Main Street America organization, part of a network of more than 1,200 main street programs across the country. Its tagline sums up the job: "Embracing the Future, While Preserving the Past."

Support for the market helps the group back local musicians and artists, give other nonprofits a platform, and offer creative activities for children and people of all ages. Sponsorships are available through [email protected].

Want to sell at the market?

Fall and winter season applications are open. Applications are only accepted through the vendor application page, not at the market. Rent is $125 a month per 10 by 10 space, and vendors are expected to be there each week. A state business license, local tax receipt and general liability insurance are required. Questions go to [email protected] or by text to (772) 285-0502.

Make a day of it this season

Stuart Main Street has a busy calendar ahead if you want to pair the market with another trip south. Its events page lists the Fall Sidewalk Sale beginning November 7, Christmas On Main on November 27 at the Riverwalk Stage, the Winter Stroll on December 3, and the Stuart Christmas Parade on December 4.
