General Conditions

The April attendance record was broken with almost 86,000 visitors to our beach. The previous April attendance record was 84,000 set in April of 2017. Attendance is taken by lifeguards who count the number of patrons inside the 3 guarded beaches (Jaycee, Humiston, South) to include the area immediately north and south of the guarded areas. Swimmers getting caught in rip currents caused lifeguards to perform 6 water rescues in April bringing the total number of people saved from potential drowning to 22 in 2018. The ocean temperature is slowly rising to the mid 70’s. Beach erosion and stinging marine life was minimal. The first marked sea turtle nests started to appear.

All swimmers are advised to pay close attention to beach condition signs and flags, swim near lifeguard towers and avoid swimming during non-guarded hours.

Areas of Progress

With help from Coastal Technologies Corporation, Hoos Architects, Mills Short Engineers, Farrow Construction, City of Vero Beach Recreation Department, Councilwoman Laura Moss, Mayor Harry Howle and many others, VBLA’s goal of giving lifeguards the ability to see more of the beach and react to emergencies faster by building a lifeguard tower and command center at Humiston Park is progressing forward.

Areas of Concern

As beach attendance grows, more and more people are outside the guarded areas increasing the likelihood of accidents and drownings. More police presence is needed on the beach to curb illegal activities.

Nikki Kalin literally has the Treasure Coast, especially Vero Beach as her home and her office. Having grown up and educated in Indian River County Nikki works with a deep knowledge to tend Vero Vine with a continual reach into all the communities of the Treasure Coast. In 2018 Nikki was responsible for the Email Marketing break out session, presenting her experience and insights to an audience of local businesses and professionals.
