Blue Cypress Conservation Area
Located within the Upper St. Johns River Basin Project, this conservation area plays a vital role in reducing flooding, restoring natural hydrologic cycles, and safeguarding water quality. In its long-term maintenance phase, it also mitigates freshwater diversions to the Indian River Lagoon estuary while providing a thriving native habitat for fish and wildlife. The western section of the conservation area encompasses the picturesque Blue Cypress Lake and Kenansville Lake, while the diverse wetland communities, dominated by maidencane, sawgrass, willows, and buttonbush, are punctuated by tree islands and cypress domes. Preserving the region’s largest remnant marsh, this undisturbed expanse in the headwaters of the St. Johns River captivates with its scenic pond cypress domes, vast open water, and breathtaking vistas on the Ansin East parcel, along with the expansive sawgrass marsh on the eastern side of Blue Cypress Lake.
