The most influential music band to emerge from the 1950’s is The Kingston Trio. Celebrating over 60 years of tradition, talent and tenacity, the striped-shirt trio is ready to perform at The Emerson Center on Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m. They rose to become the undisputed kings of an acoustic musical genre that exploded onto the American scene with banjos, bongos, guitars and charismatic personalities and became the most outstanding singing and recording act of their time.
All three current members, Mike Marvin, Tim Gorelangton and Don Marovich have intrinsic links to, and experience with, the original group: Mike is the adopted son of founding member Nick Reynolds, who was also his musical mentor; Tim, a close friend since boyhood, is one of the few musicians outside the Trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds; and Don Marovich toured with the Trio. Many of their personal memories recall the iconic trio’s performances and journey as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture – and the top of the music charts. They tell wonderful stories and perform such timeless classics “Where Have all the Flowers Gone?”, “Tom Dooley” and “MTA.” As the country marks the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, the Trio, have released a fresh, 21st century recording of the 1969 classic “Armstrong”, named for the first human to set foot on the lunar landscape. Penned in that year by late Trio member John Stewart, the tune is at once an ode to the restless human spirit of optimism and discovery and a prescriptive for a wounded world despairing of its survival. The song has been released alongside a music video, filled with imagery of space exploration as well as scenes from around the world.
