It’s Washback Season on Local Beaches

As fall brings cooler winds and occasional storms, it also marks the beginning of an important time for sea turtles on our local beaches: washback season. Washbacks are young sea turtles that hatched earlier in the year but have been swept back to shore by strong winds and rough seas. These small survivors often arrive on the beach in dire condition—lethargic, dehydrated, and sometimes covered in algae and barnacles.

When a washback is found, it’s crucial to act quickly to ensure their survival. Experts and volunteers from local organizations provide care, including medical exams, fluids, and antibiotics if needed. Once the turtles regain their strength, they are transported back to the Sargassum habitat, a vital floating seaweed environment where they find food and protection during their early years.

What Should You Do If You Spot a Washback?

If you encounter a washback on the beach, the best way to help is to immediately contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at 888-404-3922. Do not attempt to return the turtle to the water yourself, as they may not be strong enough to survive. Instead, follow the instructions provided by FWC to ensure the turtle receives the care it needs.

How You Can Help Sea Turtles Year-Round

Protecting sea turtles goes beyond washback season. Here are some ways you can make a difference:

  • Support Local Conservation Efforts: Consider donating to organizations like Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC). Your contributions help fund vital rehabilitation programs, research, and public education.
  • Symbolically Adopt a Sea Turtle: Programs like LMC’s sea turtle adoptions directly fund the care and treatment of sick or injured turtles. This makes a thoughtful gift while supporting conservation efforts.

Upcoming Opportunities to Get Involved
