Our Little Library is in honor of Mrs. Roberta Jordan. Roberta served as an AmeriCorps member with Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee Counties for many years as a reading tutor for VPK through 3rd grade students. Her students adored her and she was a source of support and inspiration for other members and program staff. She is greatly missed by all.

After serving as a school library media specialist at Beachland Elementary School in Indian River County for 36 years, the Indian River County School Media Specialists presented me with a Free Little Library as a retirement gift. I am able to continue promoting literacy in my retirement. My supervisor, Julie Milliman, arranged for the shop students at Vero Beach High School to build the neighborhood Free Little Library. The Free Little Library contains reading materials for PreK – adulthood.

The Little Free Library at McKee Botanical Garden came at the suggestion of one of our board members. The Garden has an on site library containing books about horticulture and botany, as well as a Botanical Book Club that meets several times during the season. Our Little Free Library was constructed by a group of McKee volunteers. It contains titles of all types and is an extension of the Garden’s efforts to promote literacy, education and a love of reading. All are welcome to use!

Two committees of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach, Florida, collaborated to make this Little Free Library a reality. Literacy was announced as the theme of the Religious Education program in 2013. After learning that information from the church newsletter, a member of the Social Justice Committee read an article about the LFL program in a Ft. Wayne, Indiana, newspaper. She decided to pursue the idea of a Little Free Library in Vero Beach.
