Founded in 1983, the Indian River Genealogical Society, Inc. (IRGS) began when the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century of Sebastian met to discuss the need for a genealogy society in Indian River County. IRGS is a non-profit corporation, governed by a Board of Directors which includes five elected officers and appointed chairmen of various committees. The objectives of the Society are to further genealogical research and promote interest in family history by:

Providing genealogical and historical information through publications, lectures, workshops, seminars, field trips and study groups.
Encouraging the donation of Genealogical and historical material to the genealogical section of the Indian River County Main Library for use by the general public.
Maintaining liaison with local, national and international genealogical and historical organizations.

In addition, the Society’s goal is to educate and guide future generations of Indian River County on the value of preserving family records and local histories. The society published in 1987 Cemeteries of Indian River County and is currently compiling church records of Indian River County for a future publication.Membership benefits include a 12-page newsletter from September until May, discounts for classes, workshops and seminars, monthly meetings with special programs from professional speakers, and individual help from society members. Other groups have been formed in areas such as Quakers and Personal Ancestral File (PAF) software. Research and historical information is shared to help those who are less experienced.
