Gifford Youth Achievement Center (GYAC).
On September 5, 2024, Young Journalist instructor/mentor Bonnie Bramwell completed her Communication Internship with a presentation, receiving recognition at the Crawford House of Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne.
Miss. Bonnie’s six-week Internship was based on teaching a group of 50+ 4th and 5th graders at the GYAC summer camp about the art of fictional writing, where students of different ages and backgrounds were mentored on how to think quickly, critically, and creatively.
In a teacher-to-student environment, Miss. Bonnie learned how to independently manage a classroom in an ethical fashion, as well as preparing for next day classroom activities. She learned to harbor a free-thinking environment where students expressed themselves freely through speech and writing.
At her presentation Miss. Bonnie indicated “It was a challenging environment, but I learned how to effectively teach this upcoming generation.”

All strategic communication and multiplatform journalism students at FIT must complete an internship in their junior or senior year. Students work under the direct supervision of established professionals.
Believing journalism should be regarded and taught as a serious academic discipline, The Young Journalist’s traditional after school curriculum mentors 3rd, 4th and 5th graders on how to become journalists. Since its founding in 2018, enrollment has increased 17500% to include 12 Indian River County elementary schools and the GYAC. During the 2023-2024 school year, Miss. Bonnie mentored 17 students at Fellsmere Elementary.
