BLACK HISTORY DOCUMENTARY HONORING TUSKEGEE AIRMEN OF WORLD WAR II

The Social Justice Steering Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship offers a feature film on Friday afternoon, February 16, at 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary.  The film is one of several events being held at the church to celebrate Black History Month.

This 2012 film is set in Italy in 1944 and depicts the role of the brave African American pilots whose fighter planes accompanied the American bombers. In preparation for the making of the film, George Lucas and his staff interviewed surviving Tuskegee Airmen and were given access to their original mission logbooks.

As the war takes its toll on Allied forces in Europe, a squadron of black pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen are finally given the chance to prove themselves in the sky even as they battle discrimination on the ground. The film is a tribute to the unsung heroes who rose above extraordinary challenges and ultimately soared into history.

The film stars Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terence Howard, David Oyelowo, and Nate Parker among others. Gooding was also in a 1995 film on the same topic. It is rated PG-13, so it is appropriate for students over the age of thirteen.  Many of the local schools will have a student holiday on Feb. 16, and this event provides an educational activity for them.  There will be a short discussion following the film which is free and open to the public.  No reservations or tickets are required.

The UU Fellowship, offering a liberal religion on the Treasure Coast, has easy parking and is handicap accessible. It is located on the southeast corner of 27th Avenue and 16th Street. For more information, call the church office at 772-778-5880.
