Registration is now open for Camp McKee at McKee Botanical Garden. Camp McKee offers children ages 5-9 a week-long adventure filled with activities that will bring them closer to nature. Camp will take place over two weekly sessions: July 10-14 and July 17-21.
McKee Botanical Garden’s summer program is STEAM-in’. This week long camp will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Much More! Campers will assume the role of Jr. Scientist with hands-on activities just like research scientists in the laboratory, take a look at the techniques, skills and processes through scientific investigation of bones and beaks of mammals and our feathered friends, build their very own submersible ROV (remotely operated vehicle), and express their imagination and technical skills (designing, building, decorating, and drawing) producing individual and collaborative works in daily activities that reflect the subjects found in nature, aquatic life and wildlife.
Campers will also get to interact with native wildlife species during live demonstrations where they will observe, pet and learn more about the habitats of a variety of animals. They can work with a crime scene investigator inside a mobile forensic lab. Finally, actual firefighters from the Indian River County Fire Department will be on-site to give campers a lesson in fire safety. Campers will get to tour the interior cabin of a real fire truck and experience a hands-on demonstration of the fire hose.
“Camp McKee provides a safe and stimulating environment where children can deepen their connection to the natural world while exploring the Garden," stated McKee Executive Director Christine Hobart. “It is through these unique experiences that campers will develop the attitudes and beliefs to shape them into environmental stewards for a living and non-living resources in our immediate environment, in Florida and in our explorative studies.”
Camp McKee will be instructed by Camp Coordinators, Triscia Perri-King and Doreen Franklin. Triscia is a National Board Certified Teacher. She was an educator in the New York public school system for 15 years. She previously taught middle school mathematics; high school mathematics, biology and chemistry, and college mathematics. She loves teaching children how to learn with passion, curiosity, experimentation, discovery and more. Doreen has 15+ years experience working with elementary school-aged children. She belongs to a homeschool group (she helped form many years ago) and has been a homeschool tutor. She has an extensive background working with special needs students.
The hours for Camp McKee are 8:30 am to 3:00 pm daily. Cost is $200 per week and includes a Camp McKee t-shirt along with lunch, snacks, and all activities.
