The Indian River Lagoon Research Tour is a fun and educational experience aboard a 30-passenger pontoon boat captained by Audubon Warden “Chop” Lege. During this 1.5 hour journey visitors will hear from an FAU Harbor Branch Graduate Student about the active research being conducted to help understand and protect the Indian River Lagoon ecosystem. Designated as an aquatic preserve and Estuary of National Significance, the Indian River Lagoon is one of the most biologically diverse estuaries in North America. It is home to more than 2100 different species of plants and more than 2200 animal species, including 50 threatened or endangered species. Harbor Branch research includes studies on harmful algal blooms, physical and biological dynamics, marine mammal health and real-time water quality information from the Indian River Lagoon Observatory Network. Our researchers are leading the way to find solutions to restore and conserve the Indian River Lagoon.
